What the work involves.
Many Dallas-area homes built from the 1980s into the 2000s combine brick on the lower walls with siding or hardboard on the upper floors, gables, chimney chases and dormers. Those upper sections take the weather hardest and are the hardest to see from the ground.
Hardboard siding is made from wood fibers pressed with resin. When its paint film fails or water gets behind it, it swells at the bottom edges, softens and eventually rots. Once hardboard has swollen it does not go back, so damaged boards get replaced.

Old shingles and underlayment come off, the decking is inspected, and bad boards are replaced.
Rebuilt and cleaned up
Drip edge, ice and water membrane, synthetic underlayment, GAF Timberline HDZ and Z-Ridge, ventilation corrected, and a roller magnet over the yard.
The Difference
What to know before you decide.
Hail leaves its own marks: cracked or split boards, dents in metal trim, and chipped paint on the side of the house that faced the storm. Siding damage from a storm is often part of the same insurance claim as the roof.
Replacement material depends on the house and the budget. Fiber cement is a common upgrade from hardboard because it resists moisture and does not swell. Matching existing siding on a partial repair is possible in many cases, and a full elevation is sometimes the cleaner answer when an exact match is not available.
Siding work can be done alone or alongside a roof, which is common where the roof meets a siding wall at a dormer or a second story and the flashing is being redone anyway.
